D-land hosted my first blog in 2000, and it’s where I met my best, oldest online friend and most enduring friend crush, Sandy. This week on OWOB is really interesting; not only a band I love, but a fan from a different part of the world, the Philippines, writing as much about what it’s like for her to love that band from where she is as it is about the band itself. I’ve really enjoyed the way Danice has structured the week so far (and not just because I thought her best-song-by-each-songwriter lists were quite good and interesting!) and I hope OWOB keeps including this kind of thing in the future (and I know Hendrik would like to… but I still hope he lets me take another crack at it too!).

Also this song is for me about as life-affirming as white boys with guitars ever get. Summers in the city, do what you gotta do.

There was a fantastic article on Glass a while ago where someone had defined an asshole as ‘someone wants every social interaction to happen on their terms.’

I guess maybe that’s my main problem with Google Glass.

Of course the sometimes violent, sometimes impossible (“those soft blond bangs you want to hide under like an umbrella on a rainy day”) physicality of Louise’s expressions of her desire for Boo Boo made me think of the #wonderection tag, but it’s Tina’s reaction to “no, I mean slap” that makes me feel like this was written by what, when the idea surfaced in my mind, surfaced with the phrase one of us — “us” being anyone who used to be a teenage girl.

Louise often seems like the lens through which Bob’s Burgers is focused. The stakes seem not higher, necessarily, but sharper when it’s Louise who has something to lose or learn (Louise has her hat stolen, Louise nearly electrocutes Tina in her quest to expose the truth about Thomas Edison, Louise gets dragged to a mother-daughter bonding class). And the show mostly holds her judgments of people to be true — especially when it comes to Linda and Tina, the two members of the family that Louise judges most harshly (see the episode where she nicknames them “Menstruation Nation”). Entire plots hinge on how over-the-top Linda is in her efforts to make things fun for the family, how out of touch with reality. Tina’s sexuality is sort of affectionately accepted, but it’s still ultimately seen as odd — off-putting to those outside the family, and a mystery, at best, to be tolerated by those within it.

But when Tina says, “Whoa, girl, you got it bad” the world of the show shifts — suddenly Tina, with her zombie sex dreams, with her erotic friend-fiction, with her obsession with butts, is the wise older sister capable of calmly guiding Louise through this ordeal. No longer weird, no longer a mystery, but now normal — because inexplicable, impossible desire is now normal to Louise. And the show could have abandoned its alignment with Louise here, pulled back and presented her as just another girl being fooled by her desire into thinking something mediocre is wonderful, something fake is real, something abnormal (their own feelings, their own behavior) is normal — the same way Louise regarded the rest of the screaming audience a moment before, as she stood pointing out that they could totally see the wires lowering the boys from the ceiling.

But instead the show sticks with her, and with Tina, and with all the girls in the audience. The boys are actually wonderful! The girls aren’t being fooled by anything. The boys sing songs about being interested in the audience as people. On the bus, when they think they aren’t being watched, they’re still sweet, and supportive of each other. They aren’t angry about Louise and Tina hiding in their hamper — they let Louise have her moment with Boo Boo, and as she tries to voice her feelings for him, he asks to be let out of his booster seat, because talking to a fan is important, and should be done with dignity. None of the adults Louise and Tina encounter think there’s anything weird about them or their desire to get close to the boys, either — the security guard recognizes their feelings are the earliest form of the feelings he has now, as an adult, and the bus driver is only worried about whether their parents know where they are.

Instead of abandoning its alignment with Louise, abandoning her as she becomes more like Tina, to preserve its previous reality — that Tina is weird, that teen girls are wrong about what they feel — it tilts the world to bring it back into alignment with Louise, so the reality of the teen (or pre-teen) girl with a crush becomes simply reality.
